MHI Vestas linked to Hull factory

Turbine group MHI Vestas Offshore Wind was tight-lipped today over its UK plans, as a report claimed it is actively considering a factory near Hull – the northeast England city that will soon host production by rival Siemens.

The Hull Daily Mail newspaper claims two local sources have told it that MHI Vestas is looking at a site to the east of Hull. It added that negotiations are not thought to be at an advanced stage over a plant, which would employ up to 500.

Hull is already assured of a major role in the UK’s offshore wind plans after Siemens announced plans for turbine assembly and blade production in the region.

A spokesman for MHI Vestas told Recharge: “I can confirm that we are looking to establish a supply chain footprint in the UK, but we will not enter into public speculation as to scope and locations at this time.”

MHI Vestas was formed earlier this year as the long-awaited joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan and Vestas, the Danish wind turbine giant.
