Wind recovery beds-in – Insight

Vestas looked good in Q1

Vestas looked good in Q1

The wind equipment OEM sector maintained its recovery trajectory in the first quarter of 2014, with “pure-play” turbine-makers Vestas and Gamesa looking sprightlier than some of their rivals, according to the latest research note from Recharge Insight.

With most of the financial figures for January to March now published, Recharge Insight director Robert Clover said the tentative recovery in the OEM sector that began last year seems to have bedded in.

Clover said: “With a strong recovery in progress in terms of orders and profitability, 2014 is on track to be the strongest year for at least four years for the wind sector.”

While cautioning against reading too much into one quarter, Recharge Insight noted that wind-only players Vestas and Gamesa – which both delivered strong Q1 results – fared better than more diversified industrial groups such as Siemens.

However, Clover warns that consolidation in the industry could still be competitively disruptive for both pure-plays – with the relatively smaller Gamesa potentially vulnerable in an industry of larger conglomerate competitors.
