DNV GL has been picked to advise on construction of the transmission line that will link the 300MW Lake Turkana wind farm to Kenya’s grid.

The 426km overhead line is a key element to making Lake Turkana – set to be one of Africa’s largest wind farms – commercially viable by connecting the site to the grid 80km from the capital Nairobi.

Global testing, certification and energy advisory firm DNV GL was selected by Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) to provide in-depth technical advice on building the 420kV AC line and associated substations.

A statement said: “In addition to developing the specification for the project, supervising construction work and providing training on asset management, DNV GL will continue to support the project throughout the operational phase up to financial close.”

The Lake Turkana project  in March wrapped up finance agreements worth $870m.

Denmark’s Vestas is in line to supply turbines to the project, which developers say will be located at “one of the best sites for a wind farm in the world” between two mountain ranges.
