Bid to speed smart grid build-out

An industry initiative to speed construction of utility-scale European smart grids has been launched in Spain.

The Universal Smart Energy Framework (USEF), which counts Alliander, ABB, DNV GL, IBM and RWE-Essent among its members, plans to spearhead take-up of the new technologies needed for intelligent energy networks to “become inter-operable and evolve over time to stimulate continuous innovation”.

USEF technical director Frits Bliek says the aim is to "make the smart energy system a far more open market that encourages innovation and progress, which will accelerate the process of providing users with better products and services at the same time as increasing profitability for businesses”.

The initiative's framework document, presented at a smart grids conference in Malaga, Spain, to Manuel Sánchez, DG Energy's smart grids team leader at the European Commission, targets 10 million users of USEF-compliant products services and solutions throughout Europe and abroad by 2018.
