Aveillant 3D holographic radar wired-in at a site on the east coast of England to reduce the impact on an air traffic control (ATC) system near the offshore Kentish Flats windfarm has completed a programme of tests.

The 30 turbines that make up the 49.5MW Vattenfall development, located over eight miles off the coast, were “removed” from radar screens by the system, which also rubs out the “sea clutter” of large ocean-going vessels.

“Our system is now proven to mitigate successfully over both onshore and offshore wind farms,” says chief technology officer Gordon Oswald. “It can be set up rapidly and has now been shown to successfully integrate with both video and plot extracted radars due to its extremely high update rate and 3D capability.

Aveillant's non-scanning, continuously-tracking 3D radar technology is said to detect the presence and position of aircraft in the vicinity of the largest wind turbines to “a level of accuracy that will assure safe separation of aircraft and turbine in [an] airspace”.

It was pilot tested at Cambridge airport, with follow-on demonstrations at Prestwick and Glasgow airports in Scotland.

For the latest tests, the technology was fitted to a Thales STAR 2000 ATC system.
