Spanish wind group Gamesa has completed installation of the first prototype of its G128-5.0MW onshore turbine.

The 5MW machine is in place at the company’s R&D centre in Alaiz, Spain, with certification scheduled for the final quarter of this year.

The first commercial deployment of the 128-metre-rotor turbine will come in Salo, Finland, after Gamesa delivers three to developer TuuliWatti later this year.

Signing that deal, Gamesa claimed the 5MW turbines “specifically designed to withstand low temperatures, will be the biggest and most powerful installed to date in the Finnish market”.

The G128-5.0MW is an evolution of the 4.5MW G128 version. Gamesa has also deployed a 5MW machine offshore in the Canary Islands.
