Alstom boosts ECO122 to 3MW

Alstom is boosting the capacity of its ECO122 wind turbine to 3MW and adding two towers to its portfolio, in an attempt to gain market share in low- and medium-wind locations in Europe, Laurent Carme, vice president for the company’s onshore platform, told Recharge.

Speaking at EWEA 2014 in Barcelona, Carne said the move marks an “evolution” of the ECO122, a class 3A, 2B machine currently rated at 2.7MW and with an 89-metre tower.

The French group is in “strong commercial discussion with some customers” for orders of the 3MW version, Carme revealed without disclosing who those clients were.

“We hope to get our first orders very soon,” he said.

Alstom has identified northern Europe and Germany in particular as markets with a “very strong fit” for the ECO122, Carme said.

So far, Alstom has won orders for the ECO122 mostly outside Europe, in particular in the up-and-coming Brazilian market, where the company booked 700MW in turbines in 2011/2012, including 40 units for construction firm Odebrecht.

That was followed up last year by a 1.2GW framework deal with renewables group Renova.

The company is also adding a 119-metre full concrete tower to its portfolio, following a deal with engineering specialist Freyssinet.

Alstom already had a deal in place for development of a 139-metre hybrid concrete-steel tower. It said the two options will provide customers with a better tool to catch wind resources in inland locations.
