German drive-train maker Winergy has won a technology award for its HybridDrive concept from industry consultancy Frost & Sullivan.

The Siemens-subsidiary's medium-speed "hybrid" transmission was chosen for F&S' Product Differentiation Excellence award for its cost-cutting "higher torque-to-weight ratio, shorter length, and lower mass" design.

"By decreasing the mass and increasing the torque-to-weight ratio of the drive-train, HybridDrive has resolved the issue of the inverse correlation between ROIs and power capacities of a wind turbine,” states F&S research analyst Krishna Raman.

The flagship 3MW HybridDrive, a two-stage planetary gearbox and permanent magnet generator running in a Wind-to-Energy turbine in northern Germany since last October, has produced more than 4 million kWh.
