Uruguay's state power company UTE will have its 140MW Pampa wind farm operational in the Tacuarembó department by the end of the first half of 2015 – with Germany’s Nordex in line to supply turbines, the Uruguyan government said.

According to UTE's president, Gonzalo Casaravilla, Pampa will be the largest wind farm in the country.

Nordex spokesperson Felix Losada told Recharge that the deal has not yet been closed, and requires all contracts to be signed and the first down payment made before the company can include it in its order portfolio.

However, Losada expects agreements to be finalised in coming months that will see Nordex supply 59 2.4MW turbines of the N117 model for the Pampa wind farm.

“Uruguay is a very important market for us and we are also looking at Chile,” said Losada.

However, he said that Nordex is not interested in Brazil, Latin America's largest wind power market, because of the local-content rules present in that country. Nordex builds all its turbines in one location in Germany.

Total investment in the Pampa project is estimated at $275m, of which 70% will be financed by German lenders KfW, Bayern LB and Euler-Hermes. The rest will be financed by local banks.

A financing deal was signed between Nordex and Uruguayan fund administrator Rafisa to develop the park, the Uruguayan government said in a statement.

Tacuarembó had authorized the construction of the park in December 2013. The Uruguayan Central Bank has still to give final approval for the financial operation.

Nordex is present in two other projects in Uruguay, supplying the same turbine model.

In early 2013, it announced a 28-turbine supply contract for the 67MW Juan Pablo Terra wind farm controlled by UTE.

It also signed a 21-turbine deal with French renewable energy Akuo Energy  SAS for the Polesine 50.4MW wind farm in the Florida Department.
