EDPR adds PowerUp to US fleet

Portugal’s EDP Renewables (EDPR) is to retrofit over 400 GE turbines at five of its US wind farms with new predictive software that promises to boost yearly output from the developments by 420GWh.

The PowerUp package, a customisable software-enabled platform that processes thousands of data points each second to fine-turbine turbine operation, will be installed on GE 1.5-77 machines at Canyon V wind farm in Oklahoma, Meadow Lake III in Indiana and the Top Crop I, Top Crop II and Railsplitter developments in Illinois.

“GE's PowerUp software will allow us to improve the power curve and increase the annual energy production of these 402 wind turbines,” says EDPR executive vice president Brian Hayes.

Andy Holt, general manager of GE’s renewable energy projects and services division, adds: “The platform allows EDPR to realise almost immediate benefits to their bottom line input today and also allows us to incorporate new PowerUp technologies as they are developed.”

Activated, PowerUp – part of GE’s “Brilliant” wind turbine platform – first performs a complete “before and after” wind farm power performance analysis.

By adjusting performance dials, including speed, torque, pitch, aerodynamics and turbine controls, the platform is then able to boost the power output of each unit as well as that of overall wind farm.

The extra production expected from the wind farms covered in the GE-EDPR deal could power some 33,000 American homes.

The contract model between GE and EDPR is structured to “minimize risk while enabling new technologies to be quickly added to the EDPR fleet as they are developed” in the future.
