Danish wind group Vestas claimed the mantle of world’s most powerful operating turbine after switching on its first V164-8.0 MW prototype.

The prototype generated its first power at the Danish National Test Centre for Large Wind Turbines in Østerild.

Each V164 8MW will be capable of supplying electricity for 7,500 European households.

Last September, Vestas and Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries formed a joint venture targeting the offshore wind market, transferring development of the V164-8.0MW turbine, its order book for its workhorse V112 turbine, and around 300 employees to the new entity.

Jens Tommerup, president of Vestas Offshore, said: “The V164-8.0 MW delivers industry-leading power output, based on Vestas’ proven technology solutions.

"Combined with the experience and capabilities of both Vestas and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, this puts us in a strong position in the growing offshore market.”

Vestas said serial production of the V164 will begin in 2015 dependent on orders.
