Dong Energy has started installing foundations at the 277MW Borkum Riffgrund 1 wind farm off Germany’s North Sea coast.

The Danish utility yesterday erected the first of 77 foundations in the project 37km north of the island of Borkum.

The installation vessel Pacific Orca before has shipped an initial four foundations and transition pieces to the construction site.

“There were best conditions to start installation works. A quiet sea and little wind are ideal for that,” says Andreas Elkjaer, project manager foundations at Borkum Riffgrund 1.

The company is using double sound protection measures with a bubble curtain to bring noise levels down during installation.

Dong expects to commission the wind park at the latest in 2015.
