India mulls offshore wind agency

India may set up an agency to explore the potential for offshore wind in the country, said the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

Minister Farooq Abdullah said his department will approach the country’s cabinet for a decision on the matter soon.

Abdullah told a meeting in New Delhi that the “potential of generating power through wind energy in the offshore areas was immense”.

The minister also raised hopes that the Finance Ministry will reintroduce Accelerated Depreciation for wind developers – a key incentive for the sector that was withdrawn in 2012.
