Scotland's energy minister Fergus Ewing addresses the Recharge Thought Leaders Summit

Scottish energy minister Fergus Ewing hailed the potential for Scotland and Norway to drive forward renewables in Europe as he visited Oslo for the Recharge Holmenkollen 2014 Thought Leaders Summit.

Speaking at the Holmenkollen event yesterday, Ewing noted the many commonalities between Norway, which he called “one of the most successful countries in the world”, and Scotland, both of which hold “astounding potential” for renewables.

Ewing also flagged up the future importance of floating offshore wind for both countries.

“Building on our hydro heritage and offshore energy engineering expertise gained from North Sea oil and gas, our nations are clearly both well-placed to make a huge contribution to Europe’s green energy ambitions.

“Norway and Scotland have been blessed with a wealth of natural resources and the development of energy sector in the two countries has many parallels, with the exchange of ideas and technology taking place over the last century.”

Ewing’s visit to Norway included meeting with key Norwegian companies, including Statoil, co-owner of the commissioned Sheringham Shoal and under-development Dudgeon offshore wind projects in UK waters.

Ewing also used his speech to hammer home his belief that an independent Scotland could move faster and farther to unlock its potential in both renewables and oil and gas.

The first Holmenkollen Thought Leaders Summit brought together leading figures from the global renewables industry.
