Council boosts 1GW Beatrice

Local legislators at Scotland’s Highland Council have decided to raise no objections to the plan by Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited (Bowl) to site 277 turbines in the Moray Firth.

Beatrice will boast a capacity of up to 1GW if it goes ahead as planned some 11km beyond the existing demonstrator project, where two REpower 5MW machines have been spinning since 2007.

Bowl is a joint partnership between the UK’s SSE Renewables and Spain’s Repsol Nuevas Energias.

If approved by the Scottish Government – which has the final say – the construction of the wind farm could start in 2015 and the first power produced by summer 2018.
