Alstom Wind cuts 35% of Spanish staff

France’s Alstom Wind intends to cut more than 35% of its Spanish workforce – nearly 400 jobs in total – saying that the “profound crisis” in the Spanish market and the proliferation of local-content rules in export destinations have left it with no choice.

The plan, presented to the European Works Forum, sees Alstom shutting its As Somazas facility in Galicia, where it makes wind-related electrical equipment, and shifting production to a facility in Navarre.

Separately, it will close its tower plant in Zamora.

Alstom Wind maintains a huge presence in Spain due largely to its 2006 takeover of Spanish turbine maker Ecotècnia.

Attempting to offset the news, Alstom insists that Spain “will continue to be the knowledge base and technical development centre” for the group’s global wind activities, with Barcelona remaining the wind division’s headquarters.
