UK's Centrica sets offshore wind limits

Centrica – among the UK’s largest power suppliers – says it will commit a maximum £200m ($303m) to its 580MW Race Bank project, indicating a desire to continue watering down its stake in large offshore wind ventures.

The total cost of Race Bank, approved last summer by the UK government, is expected to be more than £1.5bn.

Earlier this month Centrica announced its decision not to pursue future UK nuclear plants, dealing another blow to the coalition government’s pro-nuclear ambitions, and suggesting it may take a more aggressive approach to offshore wind.

But in commenting on future offshore wind projects, chief executive Sam Laidlaw says the utility “will only invest for value”, and “will seek to reduce our equity ownership [in future projects] through partnering”.
