The career of former UK energy secretary Chris Huhne – until recently seen as a key political ally of Britain’s renewables ambitions – is today in ruins as he contemplates a possible jail term.

Huhne stepped down as a Member of Parliament after admitting a charge of perverting the course of justice at a hearing in London.

The charge relates to allegations over false declarations about a speeding offence that took place a decade ago.

Huhne held the energy portfolio from when the current coalition government took power in May 2010 until last February, when he stood down to contest the charges.
