The Orkneys' grid is already chock-full

THE top brass at Scottish Hydro Energy Transmission (SHETL) are facing a couple of delicate meetings with unhappy islanders over the next couple of weeks, following their recent announcement that the completion dates for interconnector cables to the Orkneys and Shetlands are being delayed by two years to 2018.

Both island groups were already fighting long-running battles with DECC and Ofgem over transmission charges in their quest to convert their phenomenal natural resources into a green energy bonanza.

Learning that SHETL was pushing back the date to lay the all-important transmission cables was the last thing they needed.

The two island groups have different priorities here. The Shetlands, which have always been self-sufficient in locally generated power, are primarily interested in a 600MW HVDC interconnector to facilitate the 371MW Viking wind farm proposed for the main island.
