Swiss chemical giant Dow has opened a new materials research and development facility to advance its portfolio of resins, foams and adhesives for wind turbine blade manufacturers.

The company’s Global Wind Application Centre (GWAC), located in Freienbach, near Zurich, will house new system formulation labs, process testing equipment and semi-scale demonstration tools.

Larger component-scale manufacturing equipment in the GWAC, part of Dow’s new 800 sq metre Composite Excellence Centre, will be used for over-adhesive bonding, vacuum bagging, and vacuum resin infusion at room and elevated temperatures.

The GWAC will also feature a five-metre blade mould section, equipped with cooling and heating capabilities, coupled with temperature development sensors.

“As wind energy grows long-term, it will continue to require innovation in blade technology,” says Jean Luc Guillaume, global marketing manager for wind Log in to read complete article.
