Google has been a big backer of wind and solar

Google has made a $200m equity investment in the 161MW Spinning Spur Wind Project in Texas that EDF Renewable Energy (EDF RE) brought into commercial operation in December.

EDF RE remains owner and manager of the wind farm, which it built.

The facility uses 70 Siemens 2.3MW wind turbines, with all electricity being sold under a long-term contract to utility SPS.

"This investment reflects Google's ongoing commitment to clean energy and our belief that corporations can be an important new source of capital for this sector," says Kojo Ako-Asare, senior manager, Google Corporate Finance.

The internet search giant has been a significant investor in a number of major US wind and solar projects in recent years.
