Nuon, Vattenfall in interconnector push

‘Plug Socket’ will look at innovative offshore cabling options

A nine-company consortium led by developers Nuon and Vattenfall is undertaking a four-year project aimed at slashing the cost of wind energy through next-generation power infrastructure in the North Sea.

Building on a €2m ($2.6m) grant from the Dutch government, the ‘Plug Socket’ scheme will look at “innovative ways” of tying together individual offshore power transmission cabling into single interconnector lines,  as well as recasting international legislation and regulations and developing new financing models.

Along with Nuon and Vattenfall, the consortium is made up of Liandon, consultancy ECN, RoyalHaskoningDHV, Groningen Centre of Energy Law of the University of Groningen, Delft University of Technology, DC Offshore and Energy Solutions, and is being shepherded by engineering outfit Grontmij.
