Iberdrola awards 400MW Wikinger contract to Areva

In the latest step of a growing alliance between the two companies, Spanish utility giant Iberdrola has awarded Areva the turbine supply contract for the 400MW Wikinger offshore wind project in the German Baltic Sea, industry sources tell Recharge.

Iberdrola plans to begin offshore construction on Wikinger in 2015, and begin exporting power from the project in 2016. Under revised plans for the project which Iberdrola submitted in August 2011, Wikinger will use 5MW turbines.

Recharge revealed in June that Spanish turbine manufacturer Gamesa was one of the companies on a shortlist of potential suppliers, and officials had hoped Wikinger could be the first big sale for its planned G11X 5MW turbine.
