Update: Iberdrola says it may use Gamesa turbines at Wikinger

Spanish utility giant Iberdrola says it is considering using some of Gamesa’s 5MW offshore wind turbines “as a complement” to its 400MW Wikinger wind farm in the Baltic.

The news will give a welcome boost to Gamesa, which is due to begin installing the prototype for its planned G11X 5.0MW turbine in Aringa in the Canary Islands in Q2 2013.

Gamesa expects to have a certified prototype in late 2013 or early 2014 because of the favourable site conditions, it says.

Iberdrola has appointed French owned Areva Wind as the preferred supplier for the project with its M5000 5MW turbine, which it produces at its Bremerhaven manufacturing facility. The deal with Areva was exclusively revealed by Recharge yesterday.
