UK renewable power output leaps by 25% year-on-year

New figures put out by the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) show renewables providing an increasingly large tranche of the country’s electricity supply.

Some 9.5TWh flowed onto the grid from wind, solar, and bio-power developments in the third quarter in Britain – a jump of over 25% from a year earlier.

Renewable generation represented 11.7% of total electricity production, up from 9.1% at the same point in 2011.

Offshore wind led the way with a rise of 54.2% in output, to almost 1.7TWh, while onshore wind generation climbed by 38.2% to over 2.5TWh.

Generation from hydro fell by 16.2% compared with a year earlier, to just above 1TWh, because of lower rainfall levels in north Scotland.
