Hyundai unveils PMG as 'catalyst' for offshore wind ambitions

HHI plans to enter the offshore turbine market

South Korean shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has unveiled a 5.85MW permanent magnet generator (PMG) for offshore wind turbines.

The synchronous PMG is to be the "catalyst" for HHI to enter the 5-6MW offshore turbine market, says the company.

HHI says it aims to commercialise the generator "by 2014 after finalising field tests" but offered no further immediate details.

Fellow Korean group Samsung is already an active player in the offshore market, with its 7MW turbine slated for deployment in Scotland and at an 84MW project in South Korea itself.

Recharge revealed earlier this year that their compatriot Doosan was stepping back from the offshore wind turbine sector.
