NextEra's wind capacity reaches 10GW in US and Canada

NextEra Energy Resources, through its subsidiaries, now owns and operates 10GW of wind projects in 19 US states and four Canadian provinces, a total capital investment exceeding $16bn.

It reached the plateau by commissioning a turbine at its 400MW Limon Wind Project in eastern Colorado.

NextEra and its predecessor companies first invested in wind power in 1989. In 2012, it expects to install 1.5GW, the most new wind capacity brought on line in the US by any developer in a calendar year, according to the company.

Chief executive Armando Pimentel says NextEra’s wind projects have created jobs and helped revitalize rural communities in North America through lease payments to landowners, property tax payments, and the ongoing purchase of goods and services.
