Sumitomo expands US wind presence with Kansas projects

Sumitomo Corp. of America will partner with developer Duke Energy on a 50-50 equity basis in two Kansas wind farms totaling 299MW, part of the Japanese industrial conglomerate’s strategy to expand its presence in the US renewable energy space.

The deal covers the 168MW Ironwood and 131MW Cimarron 2 projects. It is expected to close later this month. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Plans call for Duke’s renewable energy unit and Sumitomo to complete construction of both projects by the end of this year. Duke will operate and maintain both wind farms, while Sumitomo will remain actively involved in management of the projects.

The two companies are exploring opportunities to finance the cost of constructing and operating the two projects.
