REE connects pioneering Spanish 'cool grid' system

Spanish transmission company Red Eléctrica de España (REE) has inaugurated a transmission line to integrate more wind power into the grid from southern Zaragoza.

The 30.4km Jalón-Los Vientos line — and a new line between Fuendetodos and María — will strengthen the grid and allow development of wind power in the Ebro Valley.

The pioneering grid system identifies the maximum allowable transmission capacity by constantly measuring the temperature of one of the conductors, REE says.

The temperature of the transmission lines, cooled by the prevailing wind, determines the capacity of the cables.
