The EU has passed the 100GW mark of installed wind power capacity, says the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA).

The industry body hailed the milestone as giving Europe’s wind fleet the annual generating clout of 62 coal-fired plants, 52 gas or 39 nuclear stations.

EWEA notes that while it took the European wind industry 20 years to grid-connect its first 10GW, another 90GW has followed over 13 years.

It says recent additions such as EDF's 48MW Linowo wind farm in Poland and the first turbine at Denmark's Anholt offshore wind farm helped the EU past the 100GW mark.
