Google adds 48MW of wind power for Oklahoma data centre

Google has contracted with the Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) to buy 48MW of wind output for its Oklahoma data centre from the Canadian Hills Wind Project, which is expected to enter commercial operation in the fourth quarter.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Gary Demasi, director of Google’s global infrastructure team, says on the company’s blog that the internet search giant will pay GRDA a premium to purchase power generated by Canadian Hills. GRDA already supplies power to the data facility, which came online last year west of Tulsa.

He says it is the first time that Google has partnered with a utility to boost the amount of renewable energy powering one of its data centers. It had been buying the energy directly from project developers…
