Rare 'no' from Scotland to 75MW onshore wind proposal

The Caithness project will not be joining Whitelee Wind Farm in Scotland's fleet

The Scottish government has rejected a proposed 75MW wind farm – the first time it has turned down an onshore wind project in more than four years.

Under the banner of Spittal Hill Windfarm Limited, two local farmers in Caithness, northeastern Scotland, first submitted a scoping document to the government in 2004 calling for 47 turbines. In the face of local protests, they had reduced it to just 30 turbines by the time they filed a formal application in 2007.

Highland Council, which oversees the region, had registered its opposition to the £110m ($174m) wind farm, and more than 1,500 letters of dissent were filed as part of a public inquiry, compared to about 1,300 in support.
