WindFloat platform proves its worth, says Portugal's EDP

Power group EDP says the world’s first floating semisubmersible wind turbine – the WindFloat1 (WF1) – has met its performance goals during its first stint off the west coast of Portugal.

The 1,200-tonne WF1, designed by US company Principle Power and equipped with a Vestas V80 2.0MW turbine, has delivered more than 1.7GWh since its installation last autumn five kilometres off Aguçadoura.

The unit – a triangular structure with columns 30-metres high and eight-metres in diameter, part-filled with 230 tonnes of static water ballast for stability – is built to float half-submerged when moored, with a draught of 13 metres in water depths of 40-200 metres.
