UK's ETI may use Wave Hub for floating wind turbine test

Wave Hub is located off the coast of Cornwall, England

UK government-industry body the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) is exploring the possibility of installing a floating wind-turbine demonstrator at one of the vacant berths at Wave Hub, the wave-energy test site off the southwest coast of England.

The installation would be the backbone of a £25m project, announced in October, which is targeting the design, construction and installation of a floater by 2016 at a site with water depths of between 60-100 metres and wind speeds up to about 10 metres per second.

Testing of the floating wind turbine would run for at least two years.

“The ETI is seeking potential sites to host the demonstration project and we will be working with Wave Hub to see if it could be suitable for hosting the offshore wind floating platform,” says…
