Asia to account for quarter of offshore market to 2016: BTM

Asia will soak up a quarter of the offshore wind turbines installed from now until 2016, with demand in Germany, Sweden and the US progressing more slowly than previously envisaged, according to market researcher BTM Consult.

Some 470MW of new offshore wind capacity was brought on line last year, comprising 127 turbines in four countries, with the UK and China representing the two largest markets, according to BTM. That 470MW is equivalent to 1.13% of the total wind capacity added globally in 2011.

By 2016, however, the global offshore market will expand to 5.6GW annually, with a quarter of the capacity going up in Asia. And by 2021 China will be the world’s largest market, followed by the UK and Germany – with Europe still accounting Log in to read complete article.
