In Fujian, turbine makers find that fortune favours the strong

A preference for larger, more robust turbines to cope with Fujian’s challenging terrain and frequent typhoons is turning the province into one of the best markets in China for international turbine makers.

The southeast province is usually hit by a few typhoons each year, forcing developers to put greater emphasis on turbine quality than in other parts of the country.

That has generated a flow of orders to global leader Vestas, which claims a market-leading share with 598MW of the province’s 1.6GW installed capacity.

The Danish giant recently installed a 50MW project on Pingtan island for Fujian Investment, one of four wind farms it is building in the province this year.
