BOEM seeks public input for Atlantic wind area assessment

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is requesting public comment on an environmental assessment (EA) for an area in federal waters off Massachusetts where commercial wind energy development would take place.

The area on the outer continental shelf is 826,241 acres (3,343 sq km) and contains 132 whole lease blocks and 19 partial ones. It is located 12 nautical miles (22.2km) south of Martha’s Vineyard and 13 nautical miles southwest of Nantucket Island. Water depth there is a maximum 60-meters.

BOEM and state authorities have initiated the process for leasing blocks there to private interests. Ten developers have expressed preliminary interest in potential leases.
