Buoyant UK heading for wind power big-league, says body

The UK's 630MW London Array project produced its first power this week

The UK’s wind sector is on course to add a bumper 2GW of new capacity in 2012, split evenly between onshore and offshore, says industry association Renewable UK.

“We are seeing a pretty decent picture, particularly for onshore wind, against many people’s expectations,” says RenewableUK’s policy director Gordon Edge.

New capacity in 2012 means the UK will overtake both France and Italy, putting it at the top of “League 2” among wind-power nations, says Edge.

Edge adds that he is confident that the UK will soon break through into the “League 1” of countries such as the US, China, India, Germany and Spain that have over 10GW of capacity.

The UK currently has around 7.5GW of capacity – 5GW onshore…
