Pattern starts operation of largest wind farm in Caribbean

Wind power is an essential aspect of the plans for Desertec. The wind farm shown, ¿Black Law wind farm¿ has largely become known for its exceptional environmental compatibility. It was constructed in part on the grounds of a former coalmine. This was completely renaturated as wetlands by the operating company within a habitat management plan and also comprises pastureland and commercial timberland. The farm has a combined output of around 125 megawatts.

Developer Pattern Energy says its $250m Finca de Viento Santa Isabel (FVSI) wind project, the largest in the Caribbean, has begun commercial operation in Puerto Rico.

The wind farm, the first in Puerto Rico, will produce up to 95MW of electricity from 44 Siemens turbines for about 30,000 homes. Pattern has a 20-year power purchase agreement with and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA).

"This is major milestone for renewable energy production in Puerto Rico, an outstanding achievement five years in the making and one that we are very proud to have accomplished in close collaboration with our local partners,” says Hunter Armistead, executive director of Pattern Energy.
