US Q3 new wind capacity surges as tax credit deadline looms

Wind power is an essential aspect of the plans for Desertec. The wind farm shown, ¿Black Law wind farm¿ has largely become known for its exceptional environmental compatibility. It was constructed in part on the grounds of a former coalmine. This was completely renaturated as wetlands by the operating company within a habitat management plan and also comprises pastureland and commercial timberland. The farm has a combined output of around 125 megawatts.

The US wind industry installed 1.833GW in the third quarter, bringing new capacity to 4.728GW through the first nine months of 2012, according to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).

Installations were 1.205GW in third quarter 2011 and 3.37GW through three quarters.

The US had 51.63GW of wind capacity on 30 September. AWEA data shows 8.43GW of capacity under construction in the fourth quarter across 29 states and Puerto Rico. Less than 100MW were new starts in the third quarter, reflecting industry uncertainty over whether Congress will renew the federal production tax credit that expires on 31 December.

New wind farms must be grid-connected and in normal operation by that date to qualify for the PTC, which pays $22 per MWh, inflation-adjusted for…
