UK government gives $16m grant to Siemens wind plant estuary

The UK government is to pump £10m ($16m) into developing the renewable energy sector on the Humber – the estuary site in eastern England it desperately hopes will be the home of a new Siemens wind turbine plant.

The money will be used to help develop a renewables-focused industrial infrastructure on the Humber’s south side, on the opposite bank to the Alexandra Dock site in Hull that Siemens has earmarked as the site for its assembly plant.

The cash is part of a £30m grant to business-support body the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which hopes it will offer a much-needed sign of long-term support from the UK for renewables, and offshore wind in particular.
