Nordex equips BMW car plant with 10MW of wind power

Wind turbine manufacturer Nordex has won a contract to install a quartet of its N100/2500 machines at BMW’s car-assembly plant in Leipzig, Germany.

The four 2.5MW turbines will be mated to 140-metre-high towers to ensure maximum energy capture from the local wind resource, boosting yields by up to 20% compared to machines set atop conventional 100-metre towers, says Nordex.

Construction work at the site began in September and the BMW factory is expected to be benefitting from wind power by spring 2013.

“On-site facilities for supplying large industrial plants with electricity are a new and important market for our sector,” says Lars Bondo Krogsgaard, a member of Nordex’s management board.
