GE gearing up to meet Ontario turbine local-content rules

General Electric this year will complete delivery of 593 of its 1.5MW wind turbines for eight projects in Quebec, and will apply the lessons learned there to meet local-content requirements for contracts in neighbouring Ontario.

The projects are the result of a 2003 request for proposals by provincial utility Hydro-Quebec to supply the province with 1GW of new wind power by 2012. GE says its local supply-chain manufacturing and supplier partners in Quebec have been integral to its success.

In Ontario, 11 projects will use GE turbines that will deliver 1.2GW of wind energy by 2015. The company will need to meet local-content criteria there as well.
