Enercon to build second Canadian concrete tower plant

Enercon expects to open an Ontario factory in 2013 for production of precast concrete segments for towers to support wind turbines at heights between 85- and an eventual 140-metres, Adrienne Downey, operations and business development manager, tells Recharge.

The facility in the province’s Niagara district reflects the German vendor’s recent success in Canada, where it has supply contracts for almost 1.25GW of turbines to Quebec during the next five years. It also was chosen by developer Niagara Region Wind to provide 77 3MW turbines for a project in Ontario.

Enercon has also installed turbines in Ontario, is finishing a one-turbine installation in Saskatchewan, and working on projects in Alberta, British Columbia and Nova Scotia.

As of 1 June, Enercon had installed 336 turbines totalling 744MW nameplate capacity in Canada.
