Fishermen's to use monopiles for pilot offshore wind farm

Developer Fishermen’s Energy has selected monopile foundations for its five-turbine demonstration wind project in Atlantic Ocean state waters about 2.8 (4.5km) off Atlantic City, according to Victor Bolano, a consulting engineer with the project.

Each monopile will support a 5MW XEMC-Darwind XD115 permanent magnet direct-drive turbine with a 115-meter rotor diameter. The rotor, generator and nacelle together weigh 281 tons.

Bolano says the foundations will be installed in between 32- and 40-feet of water. Each one will be 3,700-feet (1,127 meters) apart. The turbines will be clearly visible from Atlantic City’s famous oceanfront boardwalk.

The turbine array will be connected with a 34.5kV cable that will bring power ashore under the boardwalk.

The project is the first to seek qualification by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities Log in to read complete article.
