Virginia targets ocean wind area with survey, met towers

Virginia has set a 17 October deadline for submission of proposals to conduct the first geologic survey in an area in the Atlantic Ocean that the state and federal government believe is suitable for wind development.

Cost of the $600,000 survey is being shared equally by the state and Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), which regulates wind energy development in federal waters that begin 4.8km from shore along the US east coast.

The survey’s purpose is to accelerate commercial leasing and development of the 133.1sq nautical mile (45,648 hectare) area, whose western edge of the is 43.5km from Virginia Beach and the eastern edge 67.6km out from shore.

State officials expect the survey will lower costs and risks to private developers by providing insight Log in to read complete article.
