Update: Vestas mulls US options, says PTC confidence higher

Danish wind turbine group Vestas is still mulling its options over how to restructure its US manufacturing operations, but says confidence is growing over prospects of an extension to a key tax-credit for the industry.

Vestas chief operating officer (COO) Jean-Marc Lechene says that several options are being looked at, including "partial idling" of factories.

However, he adds that Vestas needs to take into consideration a number of factors before making widespread redundancies.

These include strong activity in neighbouring Mexico and Canada, continuing political uncertainty in the US, and the relative costs of laying off workers then hiring them back again when the market recovers.

The uncertainty is mainly centred on the prospects for renewal of the federal production tax credit (PTC) for wind output.
