Vestas 'on track' to deploy 8MW offshore prototype in 2014

Vestas expects to deploy the first prototype of its V164 offshore turbine in 2014 as previously planned, after increasing its capacity to 8MW.

The Danish wind turbine giant says boosting the offshore programme from 7MW – a move exclusively revealed first by Recharge yesterday – will “offer lower cost of energy and at the same time keep the reliability and structural integrity of the turbine unchanged”.

Development of the V164-8.0 MW machine is on track, says Vestas, detailing the progress of a number of key components.

Production of the first 80-metre blade for testing will start at Vestas' facility on the Isle of Wight, UK, in the fourth quarter of this year.
