MFG announces US layoffs as blade orders from GE decline

Molded Fiber Glass has laid off 92 workers at its plant in Aberdeen, South Dakota, in response to a downturn in orders for wind turbine blades from customer General Electric, Dave Giovannini, general manager at the facility, tells Recharge.

“These are skilled workers with a lot of training. They could be called back. It will depend on our customer,” he says. GE, like all turbine manufacturers, has seen US orders plummet amid uncertainty over whether Congress will extend the wind production tax credit (PTC) beyond 31 December, he adds.

Turbine installations this year could total 12GW, but are forecast to plunge to between 1.5GW and 3GW in 2013. The PTC pays $22 per MWh inflation-adjusted for a wind farm’s first decade in operation.
