Baltic could join offshore big-league, report claims

The Baltic Sea could leap into the top rank of offshore wind-power regions if it can fully harness a resource newly-estimated by consultancy GL Garrad Hassan at about 300GW.

The report, sponsored by the multi-state Baltic Sea Region Energy Cooperation (BASREC) scheme, weighed-up three key cost drivers for offshore wind deployment – wind speed, water depth and distance from shore.

GL Garrad Hassan reckons environmental and social constraints, plus “a further 80% rate of attrition due to constraints not considered”, would still work out to a wind capacity of some 40GW – a figure said to meet national renewable energy action plan targets in all the BASREC countries and to “go substantially beyond in many”.
